VITAMIN D AND ITS IMACT ON IMMUNE SYSTEM

As per journal of investigative medicine now its clearly evident that Vitamin D has important role to play in enhancing our immune system beside its effect on calcium absorption in the bones. It has been found that Vitamin D receptors is expressed on immune cells like B cells,  T cells and antigen presenting cells, and all these immunologic cells can synthesize active form of Vitamin D. This active form is capable of acting in autocrine manner and can modulate the existing and adaptive immune response. So deficiency in Vitamin D results in weak immune response and high susceptibility to infections.

The immune system protects the body from foreign and invading organisms promoting protective immunity , now the role of Vitamin D is well defined in recent years in enhancing our immune system power. Other major function of vitamin D is to promote bone health, as it enhances absorption of calcium in the small intestine and stimulate osteoclast differentiation and calcium reabsorption of bones. Vitamin D also promote mineralization of collagen matrix. Vitamin D can be obtained from diet, like fatty fish, seafood, mushrooms, egg yolk, supplements and best source is sunlight.
